Pamodzi Kuthetsa Nkhanza (PKN)

Pamodzi Kuthetsa Nkhanza means “Together to End Abuse.” This large-scale project tackles the root causes of intimate partner violence (IPV) and gender-based violence (GBV) in Lilongwe and Balaka. WAG is implementing it as part of a three-organisation consortium, funded by the UK government.

About This Project

The Problem We Are Addressing
Intimate partner violence is one of the most common forms of GBV in Malawi. Women and girls with disabilities face a higher risk. Harmful social norms, unequal power between men and women, and weak community accountability all contribute to the problem.
The SASA! Together Approach
PKN uses the SASA! Together methodology — a structured, community-led approach that helps communities examine and challenge harmful power dynamics between men and women. It mobilises community activists and local leaders to shift mindsets and build local accountability for preventing GBV.
Gender Transformative Curriculum (GTC)
PKN trains frontline service providers — including healthcare workers, police, and social welfare officers — using the Gender Transformative Curriculum. This challenges harmful norms and builds more inclusive, disability-friendly service delivery. In 2024, 350 frontline service providers were trained.
Survivor Support and Justice
The project supports survivors of IPV and GBV through the Moyo Olemekezeka ("Dignified Life") programme, which provides economic and social empowerment. PKN also strengthens referral pathways and works with the justice system to improve case management and survivor-centred responses.
Policy Advocacy
WAG and its consortium partners engage with government departments, traditional authorities, and civil society networks to strengthen policy and legal frameworks on GBV. In 2024, PKN supported a review of Malawi's National Plan of Action and submitted a position paper for the Women's Manifesto.

Key Results in 2024

14,000+ people reached directly
PKN launched in seven Traditional Authorities across Lilongwe and Balaka, reaching over 14,000 community members through awareness sessions, campaigns, and direct training.
20,000+ reached indirectly
Radio campaigns and partner engagements extended PKN's reach to an estimated 20,000 additional people across both districts.
288 Community Activists and 125 Community Leaders trained
Trained on the SASA! Together approach, these community members are now driving GBV prevention work in their own areas — with ongoing mentorship and monthly review meetings to sustain momentum.
Improved help-seeking behaviour among survivors
Reported increases in survivors seeking help and in referrals to support services. Community leaders showed greater confidence in speaking out against GBV.
Signed MoU with Malawi Police Service
A formal agreement with the police strengthened coordination on GBV case management. PKN also produced a media programme aired during the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV.
