Disability Rights Fund (DRF)

The Disability Rights Fund is an international grant-maker that supports organisations led by persons with disabilities to claim their rights. From 2022 to 2024, DRF funded WAG to advance the rights of women and girls with disabilities in Malawi — with a focus on health, justice, and access to work.

About This Project

The Disability Rights Fund prioritises organisations that are led by and for persons with disabilities. WAG — founded and led by a woman with a disability — is exactly the kind of organisation DRF was set up to support.

The grant covered the period 2022 to 2024, a time of significant growth for WAG. It ran alongside other projects including AWDF and SDDirect support, and together these grants helped WAG develop into a more capable, better-resourced organisation.

Advancing Rights in Health
The project supported women and girls with disabilities to access health services — including sexual and reproductive health care — that are too often out of reach. WAG engaged healthcare providers and policymakers to improve the accessibility and quality of services for persons with disabilities.
Advancing Rights in Justice
WAG worked to improve access to justice for women and girls with disabilities — including those who have experienced violence, abuse, or discrimination. Activities included engaging police, courts, and legal aid providers to make their services more accessible and disability-responsive.
Advancing Rights in Work
Economic exclusion is one of the most persistent barriers faced by women and girls with disabilities. Under this project, WAG advocated for their inclusion in both public and private sector employment, and supported beneficiaries to access economic opportunities and build financial independence.

What This Project Achieved

Greater awareness of rights among beneficiaries
Women and girls with disabilities supported through the project gained stronger knowledge of their rights in health, justice, and employment — and greater confidence to assert them.
Improved engagement with duty bearers
Healthcare providers, police, and employers were engaged on disability inclusion, helping to shift attitudes and improve practical access for women and girls with disabilities.
Strengthened national advocacy
WAG used the project to amplify the voices of women and girls with disabilities in national policy spaces — contributing to the organisation's growing recognition as a key actor in Malawi's disability rights movement.
A stronger organisation
The DRF grant helped WAG build staff capacity in disability rights, financial management, and programme delivery — directly contributing to the organisation's ability to win and manage larger grants in the years that followed.
